The Three Different Mowing Approaches Booval Asks For
I’m Aurey O’Keefe, owner of AOK Mowing. I’ve been mowing Booval since 2017, working a suburb that runs three housing eras in tight clusters: pre-war worker cottages near the station, post-war brick a few blocks out, and mid-century family homes through to the river.
Booval grew up around its railway station on the Ipswich line. The streets closest to the station carry worker cottages on raised stumps with narrow side access and front lawns under heavy shade from mature canopy.
The run covers the cottage streets near the station, the brick and mid-century family blocks through the centre of the suburb, and the larger lots running north along Brisbane Road toward the river. Jacaranda and poinciana drop heavy through November and December, and that’s part of the visit.
Most first calls come from new owners taking on an older property, families organising mowing for a parent who’s been on the same street for decades, or owners preparing a character home for sale. Older Blocks, Smaller Lots, Mature Gardens
Most Booval properties on the run fall into one of these setups, all on the same fortnightly cycle:
Most central streets sit on blocks under 600m², smaller than the newer Ipswich estates. Walk-behind for the tighter cottage lawns, ride-on for the bigger family blocks back toward Cameron Park. Mow, edge, whipper snip and a clean blow-down before the gate closes.
Either Side Of The Brisbane Road Corridor
Booval splits naturally into a few working zones. Each one mows a bit differently because of how the streets have aged.
The Station Side And South Station Road
The tighter older streets around Booval railway station and South Station Road carry the smallest blocks in the suburb. Worker cottages sit on raised stumps with narrow side access often just wide enough for a push mower. Front lawns sit under heavy shade from mature street trees.
Walk-behind work dominates through this pocket. Side-access widths, gate latches and the order of mowing front-to-back get mapped on the first visit so nothing has to be worked out again next time.
Cameron Park And The Southern Streets
The southern pocket running toward Cameron Park and the Silkstone side carries slightly larger family blocks. More backyard. More lawn. More of the established hedges that have been growing along the fence lines since these homes were built.
Front yards through here often have decades-old jacarandas or poincianas that change what the November and December visits look like.
North Of Brisbane Road Toward The River
The quieter pocket running north of Brisbane Road toward the Bremer River shares more in common with North Booval than with the southern half of the suburb. Bigger lots. More open lawn. Mature gum and bottlebrush drop. A few acreage-style blocks along the river side. The ride-on does most of the work here.
Older Suburbs Need A Different Approach
Mowing a settled suburb like Booval is not the same as mowing a fresh estate lawn. Years of seasonal cycles, mature plantings and tight access on older blocks all change how a visit runs.
Funded Mowing For Older Booval Homes
A solid share of bookings here come through veterans who’ve lived in the suburb for decades and now access DVA Household Services. NDIS participants in long-held family homes and managed rentals around the station also sit on the regular run.
Older established homes often carry bigger lawn-care decisions, and mowing is usually the easier service to lock in once the paperwork is approved. Bookings can come through the participant or veteran, a family member, a support coordinator or a plan manager.
Plan-managed and self-managed bookings welcome. NDIA-managed and agency-managed plans aren’t taken on at this stage.
WorkCover and NIISQ are also part of the funded work handled on the run.
Beyond The Mow: Leaf Drop, Hedges, Cleanups
Established gardens here often generate work beyond the standard mow. These can be arranged alongside your regular mowing:
Between East Ipswich, Silkstone And Bundamba
Booval sits about 3km east of the Ipswich CBD. East Ipswich runs to the northwest. Silkstone sits to the south. Bundamba is the next suburb east along Brisbane Road. North Booval continues up to the Bremer River.
The eastern Ipswich rotation covers Booval, East Ipswich and Silkstone on the same run. Raceview sits a few minutes further south past Silkstone and is also on the rotation.
